The Shadowed Road tells the story of Selome Fekadu—a 14-year-old girl who lives in a rural village in northern Ethiopia. Her dream is to become a teacher. Her father wants her to become the obedient wife of a cow herder.
Compelled to claim her right to education, Selome runs away from her village in the middle of the night. What will be her fate? Will her strict father track her down? Will the arduous journey wear her down? Will her dreams be fulfilled? Join Selome as she embarks on a long journey through Ethiopia’s countryside, filled with chance encounters, dangers, and lifelong lessons.
“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighbourhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

A glimpse of contemporary Ethiopia
THEMES
Through the juxtaposition of Canada and Ethiopia, students will gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for these four pedagogical themes
GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
The goal is for students to reflect on their understanding of the concept of citizenship and then to apply it in a global sense, coming to an awareness of what it means to have rights and responsibilities towards citizens around the world.
BASIC EDUCATION
The key to Ethiopia’s future success and prosperity is building on its current educational initiatives with an emphasis on increasing the rate of literacy. With a literate population, progress can be made. Basic education for girls and boys will result in an educated citizenry; human rights and democratic principles will have the opportunity to flourish.
DEMOCRACY
Students will explore the evolution of democracy and democratic principles in Ethiopia. They will examine its past, when repressive Marxist-Leninist forces ruled the
country for decades, and compare it to the present, as it enters a more democratic stage. Although the government in Ethiopia has a long way to go, it has come a long way as well.
HUMAN RIGHTS
Beginning first with reading the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, students will research the recent political history in Ethiopia and examine the conditions leading up to the current political climate. They will discover how human rights issues had been dealt with in Ethiopia during times of war and conflict and contrast this with current conditions in that country.
REVIEWS
The content and skills in the unit are multidisciplinary, making it easy to teach and assess many curricular expectations. The themes of Global Citizenship and Human Rights embedded in the story are relevant for today’s students. In the story, students easily gain empathy for the struggles of Selome as she tries to achieve her goals and gain her independence. The format is easy to use and totally engaging for students!
Anita Townsend / Education Consultant and Retired Principal at SCDSB, Ontario
A very engaging approach to Social Studies and Literacy. I like how the lessons contain links to resources, eliminating the need to hunt them down. I really like the idea of tracking student progress and the fact that I can import students directly makes it less time consuming for a teacher. The story itself is good and hits the different levels of differentiation.
Adolfo Diiorio / Literacy Coordinator and Instructional Coach District School Board of Niagara, Ontario
Music, photos, videos, storyline, art, site navigation—all very well designed and quite engaging. For grades 6-8, I can see this teaching resource being quite useful in a large “global issues” unit, or as a stand alone focussing on Ethiopia, children’s rights, cultural awareness, etc.
